Coaching is about more than wins and losses. It is about making a positive impact on the game, the people, and the community. NCR is proud of its over 800 coaches dedicated to improving the lives of young men and women playing college rugby across the United States.
The Coach of the Month program recognizes coaches who exemplify the characteristics of a strong role model, build confidence and character in their players, devote time and energy towards building for the future, and make a profound impact in the lives of their athletes and the sport of rugby.
Meaghan Schmitt, a native of Milwaukee, WI, has dedicated herself to rugby through her roles as both a player and a coach. Growing up around the game, with her parents coaching women’s collegiate rugby, Meaghan developed a deep passion for the sport. She began her playing career at Catholic Memorial High School, where she excelled and captained the Wisconsin U19 Selectside.
After high school, Meaghan shifted her focus to coaching and administration, serving as Manager for St. Thomas Rugby from 2016 to 2019. In February 2020, she became the Head Coach of St. Thomas Rugby, guiding the team through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under her leadership, St. Thomas achieved historic milestones, including a 2nd place finish at the 2024 CRC 7s in Division III and the club's first-ever regional appearance in 15s. She also spearheaded record recruitment and fundraising efforts, which allowed the program to expand and gain access to on-campus practice facilities.
In addition to her work at St. Thomas, Meaghan serves as the Technical Director for the Minnesota Rugby Union, overseeing the development of rugby programs across the state, enhancing player pathways, and coaching education.
Meaghan’s coaching style focuses on developing not only rugby skills but also well-rounded individuals. Known as the "rugby mom" by her players, she fosters a supportive, accountable, and motivating environment. Her leadership has brought St. Thomas Rugby to new heights, with the team qualifying for NCR 7s Nationals for the first time in the club’s history and advancing to regional 15s play.
Meaghan's commitment to her players and her tactical mastery have made her a key figure in the growth of rugby at St. Thomas and beyond. Her continued success and impact make her a deserving recipient of the Rugbee Coach of the Month award.
Bupe Ngwashi has made a significant impact as the head coach of the University of Maryland women’s rugby team. Originally from Syracuse, NY, Bupe’s passion for rugby began at 14 while attending school in South Africa. Under the guidance of Coach Mike Cousins, he transitioned from a player focused on scoring to a leader who understood the intricacies of team dynamics.
When Bupe joined UMD in Spring 2024, he faced a team that had endured four consecutive losing seasons. Recognizing the need for a mindset shift, he instilled a culture of resilience and growth, encouraging players to view weaknesses as opportunities for improvement. His mantra, “go again,” served as a rallying cry for the team, reinforcing the importance of perseverance.
Bupe's coaching approach emphasizes individualized feedback and support, fostering a strong sense of trust among players. He actively ensures that all team members have the necessary resources to succeed, often assisting those in need of equipment. This commitment has helped cultivate a passionate and dedicated team environment.
One player, Isabella Battish stated, “He’s brought excellence, confidence, and competitiveness to the UMD women’s rugby team, something it hasn’t seen in years.”
Under his leadership, the UMD women’s rugby team transformed from a historically struggling group to a competitive force in the MARC conference. Bupe’s focus on player development and team dynamics has not only changed the team’s performance but has also instilled a winning mentality that promises to shape their future.
As he receives the Coach of the Month award, it is clear that Bupe Ngwashi’s dedication and leadership have had a lasting impact on his players and the program as a whole.
At Ohio University, a remarkable transformation is underway within the women’s rugby program, driven by the passion and dedication of its head coach, Emma Perry. At just 20 years old, Emma's journey from player to coach is a testament to her love for rugby and her commitment to fostering a vibrant team culture.
Emma’s rugby story began in her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she captained the Moon Area High School team to a Pennsylvania state championship in 2022.
When she arrived at Ohio University as a freshman, however, she found a women’s rugby program struggling for support and stability. Emma, who had the most rugby experience among her peers, knew significant changes were needed.
Recognizing the potential within her team, Emma took on the role of assistant coach in her sophomore year, advocating for a transition to 15s rugby. Under her leadership, the program saw its numbers soar from a mere 13 players to 35. The 2023-2024 season marked a pivotal moment: the team celebrated its first 15s victory in over a decade against Ball State, a triumph that echoed Emma's vision.
Now serving as head coach, Emma has continued to expand the program, successfully integrating it into the Allegheny Rugby Union. This strategic move has positioned Ohio University women’s rugby to compete at a higher level, an important step in developing the skills and confidence of her players. The team's growth has led to the formation of both a competitive side and a developmental team, ensuring that players of all experience levels have the opportunity to thrive.
Emma’s hard work and dedication has inspired her players, with Bailey Giannini stating, “Seeing how much she gives while still being a full time college student and having another job outside of coaching motivates us to also give our all every time we step on the pitch.”
Emma's coaching philosophy is deeply rooted in the principles of rugby culture. "I truly believe that rugby has the power to change people’s perspectives, perceptions… and lives," she explains. Her goal for her players is to "make friends, empower themselves, embrace their physicality, and to be competitive yet caring.”
She emphasizes resilience, hard work, and passion as the cornerstones of her team's culture, believing that these values will empower players long after they leave the pitch.
Emma credits the success of the program to the collective efforts of her players. "We've managed to rebuild a team and reconstruct a culture here at Ohio that will only benefit future generations.” As she prepares to graduate next year, Emma is confident that the foundations of a powerful program have been laid.
As she leads her team into the future, Emma Perry exemplifies the spirit of rugby—both on and off the field. With each practice and every match, Emma is not only coaching a team but also nurturing a community, ensuring that the essence of rugby culture will continue to thrive at Ohio University long after her departure.
