The Student Leader of the Month program recognizes student-athletes who go above and beyond in both leadership and community service efforts. We are looking for student-athletes who not only lead on the pitch, but are making a positive impact off the pitch.
A third-year student pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Public Relations with a minor in Science Communications, Alexandra’s journey with University of Texas Women’s Rugby began in her freshman year when she was introduced to the sport by a fellow student.
As president of the rugby club, Alexandra has shown exceptional leadership and dedication. Starting as the recruitment chair, she quickly stepped up to enhance the club's reputation and foster an inclusive environment for new players. Despite lacking prior experience in a vice presidential role, she devoted her summer to learning about rugby and effective club management, enabling her to implement officer training programs and create new positions within the board.
Her proactive approach to recruitment has been particularly effective. By capitalizing on events like the summer Olympics, Alexandra successfully increased team numbers, welcoming enthusiastic newcomers eager to engage in the sport. Her ability to motivate and support both new and returning members has been essential in cultivating a positive team culture.
In addition to her rugby commitments, Alexandra volunteers with Austin Pets Alive! and has contributed freelance articles, including a published piece in the San Antonio Express-News. She also tutors at the on-campus writing center and is pursuing a creative writing certificate.
Of her teammate, Isabella Lau stated, “Even while she has been injured at times and not at her best, she always manages to show up to practice and step up each time no matter what… she never complains or anything even if she has a lot on her plate.”
Alexandra's resilience, organizational skills, and dedication have significantly revitalized the rugby program, making her a deserving recipient of this award. Her leadership embodies the spirit of teamwork, and has made a tremendous impact on the University of Texas Women’s Rugby team.
A dedicated third-year criminal justice major at SUNY Fredonia, Chris Smith exemplifies what it means to lead both on and off the field.
Chris chose Fredonia after being warmly welcomed by a member of the women’s rugby team during a campus visit. The camaraderie experienced with the men’s rugby players solidified his decision to join the team,and he quickly found his place within this supportive community. Now, as president of Blackhorse Rugby, Chris leads with passion and commitment, embodying the values of teamwork and inclusion that the sportrepresents.
In his role as president, Chris has gone above and beyond in recruiting new members and fostering a sense of belonging within the rugby community. He collaborates closely with the coaching staff to ensure players are engaged and educated about the sport, helping them develop both on and off the field.His leadership has not only strengthened the team but has also created a home for many students navigating college life away from their families.
Chris’s involvement extends beyond the rugby pitch. He actively participates in various school-led events such as “Fall Sweep” and “Move-In Day,” and he volunteers at a local animal shelter. He has spearheaded fundraising initiatives to support the club’s expenses,ensuring that players have the necessary resources for insurance, travel, and tournament fees. His ability to forge partnerships with local restaurants for fundraisers and banquets showcases his commitment to community engagement and collaboration.
As a captain, Chris is known for his strategic insights during games and his ability to inspire his teammates. His approachable nature encourages team members to share new ideas, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and heard.
