NCR 2020-2021 – Questions and Answers

National Collegiate Rugby

2020-21 Season Q&A

How will things be different under NCR?

NCR is committed to its small college heritage and will continue to run our existing small college championship pathways.  Beginning in 2020, we will also add open divisions which will provide pathways for former men’s DIA, DIAA and DII and women’s DI and DII teams – from both small and large schools.

In addition, NCR has established an independent operating model and will now offer our members full insurance, a registration platform, and a competition management system.

How will the Fall season be affected by COVID-19?

Here is the latest NCR update.

Will players need to register with USA Rugby?

NCR will not mandate USA Rugby membership for our players. We understand that many of our  members are big fans of our national teams, and we are working with USA Rugby to provide optional membership and donation programs to support the national teams.

What insurance will be offered?

Details about insurance coverage for the 2020-21 season can be found on the insurance overview here.

What are the fees?

2020-21 NCR Membership Fees

(includes insurance and processing fees)

Plan 1 Plan 2
Club Fee $160 $1,300
Player Fee $65 $20

What do the plans mean and how do they work?

The two plans are designed to accommodate teams who may received direct funding from their schools and those who do not.  Also, teams who receive direct funding often find that while their school may pay for team/club dues they will not subsidize individual player dues.

Plan 1

Designed for teams where the school will pay the team dues and the individual members pay the player dues.

Plan 2

Designed for teams who receive little support from the school and have to raise funds for all expenses.  This allows for teams to register and play for a minimal initial outlay.

How will the open division work?

The open divisions will be developed in partnership with our new conferences to ensure that each team participates in an appropriate competition structure. Depending on the type and number of teams that join NCR, there may be multiple championship pathways within the men’s and women’s open divisions.  For more information, please contact Brad Dufek (men) or Angela Smarto (women).

When can my team register for next season?

We are finalizing our new registration platform call SportLomo.  Over the summer, we will be working with our member conferences to populate the system and distribute training materials to teams.  We plan to open registration on August 1.

2020-21 Membership Fees and Insurance Program

National Collegiate Rugby is pleased to announce its 2020-21 membership fees and planned insurance offering. Starting on August 1, all NCR clubs, players, and coaches will register and pay directly through the NCR membership platform. Membership fees include appropriate liability and accident insurance.

In establishing the fee structure, NCR strives to set affordable levels for our players while ensuring the organization provides exceptional services, safe environments and high-quality competitions. For the first time, all member fees will be invested directly into the support and growth of college rugby.

NCR will offer two payment structures for our members. These options were designed to better meet the diverse preferences of our programs and make it easier for clubs to obtain funding support from their schools and alumni.

2020-21 NCR Membership Fees

(includes insurance and processing fees)

Option 1 Option 2
Club Fee $160 $1,300
Player Fee $65 $20

Through NCR’s new registration platform, conferences and clubs can include their member fees in the registration process and receive direct payments.

The membership fees include General Liability and Participant Accident insurance for players, coaches, referees, and volunteers while engaged in NCR rugby activities. Under NCR’s insurance program, referees will not incur any fees. To learn more about NCR’s insurance, you can access the insurance overview on ncr.rugby.

We recognize that many of our members are big supporters of USA Rugby national teams. While NCR members will not be required to pay USA Rugby membership fees to participate in NCR sanctioned events, we are exploring ways that our members can provide optional donations to these teams, as well as, the national governing body.

Coaches must also register and pay through NCR. The coaching registration fee will fund a range of services, including several new coaching educational opportunities. The coaching fee will be announced in the coming weeks.

Of course, we are living in unusual times and the Fall rugby season may be affected by the coronavirus safety measures. As we learn more about universities’ plans for the Fall, NCR may need to create a modified season or plan for fewer teams. These adjustments may also necessitate a review of the fee structure. Above all, NCR’s approach will be guided by the safety and well-being of our student-athletes.
