General FAQs
Are spectators covered?
Spectators are not “insured persons” and can not claim under the Participant Accident policy. However, NCR and its registered clubs are protected under the General Liability policy in the event that they are legally liable for personal injury sustained to a spectator or third party.
Must players be registered to be covered?
Yes. All players must be registered members of National Collegiate Rugby in order to participate in rugby activities and be covered under the insurance coverage.
Must coaches be registered with NCR to be covered?
Yes. A coach must register and complete the minimum coaching requirements including a background check. After a coach has completed the necessary registration steps, they will be considered “active” and eligible for insurance coverage.
Must referees be registered with NCR to be covered?
No. Referees are considered “Insured Persons” whenever they are officiating an NCR match (at least one registered NCR team) and are covered under the accident and liability policies.
By extension, the referee’s Society is protected under the liability policy if it is held legally liable for any personal injuries that were caused by the referee’s actions.
How much does the insurance cost?
The NCR membership fee includes insurance for players and coaches. Referees are included at no cost.
Are players and coaches covered while touring internationally?
Yes. The policy applies to all matches covered events worldwide.
Who is covered?
The NCR Insurance plan defines the Insured as “the National Collegiate Rugby Organization, Inc. and all affiliated conferences and clubs.”
In addition the plan provides coverage to the following Insured Persons:
- NCR Registered players
- Active NCR Coaches
- Referees and other match officials while officiating an NCR match*
The liability insurance also covers non-playing officials including:
- team managers
- trainers
- physical therapists
- directors
- contractors and employees
- broadcast service providers
- sponsors
- ball boys/girls
- co-opted volunteer workers
- other match officials of the insured.
*By extension, the referee’s Society and its officers are protected under the policy if it is held legally liable for any personal injuries that were caused by the referee’s actions.
Is my club covered when we play a non-NCR team?
Yes. The insurance follows the NCR club regardless of the opponent or location.
I already have health insurance – why do I need participant accident insurance?
In the event of an injury, a participant may be faced with many out-of-pockets expenses that are not covered by their existing health insurance. The personal accident insurance provides supplemental coverage to help a player financially during an injury.
Are referees covered by NCR’s insurance program when NCR is the visiting team?
Yes. Referees are covered by NCR’s insurance program whenever the match includes at least one NCR team, regardless of location.
Am I covered under NCR’s policy while playing for other, non-collegiate clubs?
No. The NCR insurance program only applies to your collegiate club. You must seek alternative insurance through the sponsoring association of the non-collegiate club (i.e., USA Rugby).
